Subjunctive or Preterite

Aún no ha llegado Juan. ________.Juan hasn't arrived yet. He may have missed the bus.
In a quiz question, I used puede que + past subjunctive and it was marked incorrect. The correct response used the preterite. Why would the preterite be used after puede que?

Puede que perdiera el autobúsPuede que perdió el autobús.

Hola Amanda

I had a look at your test and I think you misread the feedback. You chose the answer "puede que perdió el autobús", using the preterite (indicative) which is the wrong answer. The correct answer (set as correct in the system)  is showing in green in the results page with the subjunctive "puede que perdiera el autobús".

Saludos

Ah, I must have accidentally clicked on the wrong one causing me to misread which one was correct.  Sorry, thanks for your help.
