I’m the examples “that is an umbrella” and “I have an idea” where there is no clear gender established is it acceptable to use either un or una?

All nouns have a gender.

Hola Ryan

In Spanish all nouns have a specific gender, either masculine or feminine. For inanimate things like "umbrella" or "idea" they still have a gender that needs to be memorized.
