I think the cave that we were going to see pasada mañana is as far from the speaker as from the listeners, and it is far. Caves are usually somewhere outside of a city. So I used aquella and even after I read the lesson I i think that it was the correct answer.
Esa vs aquella

Esa vs aquella
Hola Irina
When we talk about "that/those" you may use both ese/aquel..., but in this case (as in other test-questions on this topic), we've given a hint which makes you narrow it down to just one option. In this case the hint is saying "The cave is at a medium distance from the speaker", giving the idea that the cave is not really that very far away (aquella in this case).
I hope it clarified it.
Saludos cordiales
Inma
I see what you mean. They gave a hint (“medium distance”) that should tell you which answer they wanted, but it’s not clear how it fits in the context of “Pasado mañana vamos a explorar …… cava histórica”. In other words, what is an example of “middle distance” context? Are they already exploring the area near the cave? Or is it completely subjective, that is, how they perceive it?
