Why is it "Yo fui el primero DE mi clase" and not "Yo fui el primero EN mi clase" for "I was first in my class?" Is there any difference or is DE also acceptable?

De o En?
This question relates to:Spanish lesson "Conjugate and recognise ir and ser in the preterite tense in Spanish (El Pretérito Indefinido)"
Asked 4 years ago
Hola Rahul
When we refer in Spanish to be "one in a group", we tend to use the preposition "de", instead of "en" like in English, as if saying you are the first OF your class, not IN your class. Another similar example would be:
Ella fue la ganadora de su grupo.
She was the winner in/of her group.
Saludos,
Inma
