When working through the exercise, "En la televisión anunciaron nuevas medidas económicas …" was accepted as correct, but in the final version [which gets read to us at the end], "En la televisión anunciaban nuevas medidas económicas" was preferred... > This is not really a criticism or a question, because a good case can be made for each of those^ tenses - but you might like to cover that point to reassure us.

anunciaron / anunciaban
This question relates to:Spanish writing exercise "The Spanish financial crisis"
Asked 4 years ago
Hola David,
Both the preterite anunciaron or the imperfect anunciaban are equally correct, as the speaker could be talking about a finished action or a descriptive action. There is nothing in the text previous to that sentence that clearly triggers one or the other, so I will change it so it shows both alternatives as good ones. I hope that helps.
Note that, currently, the system shows one answer as the "best" answer and then a few more as also good answers. We are currently discussing about showing more than one "best answer" for cases like this. We may be rewording this soon.
Saludos
Inma
