The bot wants “para.” I can see how “para” works if the intention is to say they’ve scheduled their vacation to start at that time. But that’s not the intention that I get from the context. It seems more like this upcoming “puente” is a time period during which they’ll be on vacation and “por” is appropriate.

If we used "por" in this sentence it would indicate an approximate time "around..."; with "para" we are indicating a more precise time, more specific. 
This other similar example from the lesson conveys the same:
Mis hermanos vendrán a casa para Navidad. (for Christmas time)
This same sentence used with "por":
Mis hermanos vendrán a casa por Navidad. (around Christmas)
would be very similar but the listener would understand that they are coming "around" Christmas, not that precise.
