Why not subjunctive present tense?
In this item: "Era recomendable que fuéramos juntos a la excursión" why is "fuéramos" and not "vayamos" used for the translation "It was recommended that we go together on the trip."?

Hola Dan
It needs the imperfect subjunctive "fuéramos or fuésemos" because the main clause is using a verb in the past "era recomendable. que...". It is following the natural tense sequence. In the English you can see the present tense "that we go" and that may make you think you need the present subjunctive, not the past subjunctive.
