Whenever I click "estas/eres" for the informal/formal where are you from question, it says its wrong and corrects it to "de donde son". The lesson doesn't mention "son" at all.

You're right. Using the plural forms of the verb ser in not part of the content in this lesson. We've adjusted the test-questions so that specific test-question shouldn't appear now.
