sino pero sino que
Cuando me rompí la muñeca no me operaron ________ me pusieron un vendaje. When I broke my wrist they didn't operate on me but they put a bandage.(HINT: Choose "pero", "sino" or "sino que")i put sino que because there are two different verbs and they substituted an operation for a bandage is there another way of explaining the difference. I've looked at other answers here and see that many people are confused with this.
This question relates to:Spanish lesson "Difference between pero, sino and sino que in Spanish (but) "

Hola Julie
It's true that this could be seen either way so I have clarified with a hint to make sure this is seen as a substitution. I hope it helps.
