similar chapter on whenever etc

Como / cuando / donde / quien with indicative or subjunctive in Spanish

I find it confusing. there is another note on this to indicate subjunctive with wherever, whoever etc.

is both the same thing with different ways of expressing or it is not the same thing?

call us whenever you get there

in this note, it says = llámame lleguen cuando lleguen

based on another notes, can i say ' llámame cuando lleguen' ?

are both the same?

Hola Ashlyn

In the first lesson you mention we focus on the use of como, cuando, donde, quien with either the indicative or the subjunctive, depending on whether the information is known, unknown, a future event... Their translations are generally however, whenever, wherever, whoever. For example:

Ella me llama cuando quiere. (indicative)

She calls me when/whenever she wants.

Ella me llamará cuando quiera.  (subjunctive)

She will call me whenever she wants.

On the other hand, the second lesson is still expressing a whenever, whoever, however, etc but using a different structure, this being more idiomatic and emphatic. This structure is repeating the verb twice in the subjunctive. For example:

Llámame llegues cuando llegues.

Call me whenever you get there.

No abras la puerta sea quien sea.

Don't open the door whoever it may be (never mind who it might be)

These, repeating the verb and always using the subjunctive are always expressing something unknown and this structure emphasises this.

I hope it clarified it.

Saludos
