Question on Mediterranean climate.

Could you say 'poner una chaquetta' instead of 'llevar una chaquetta'?

Llevar means to wear - in the lesson the phrase was “we had to wear jackets.” 

Ponerse means to “put on [yourself].” You have to use the pronominal form, and the phrase would then be “we had to put on our jackets.”
