Qué + noun/Cuál + noun

1. Qué música te gusta más?

What music do you like the most?

2. Cuál universidad es mejor?

Which university is better?

Is Qué + noun used when the universe to chose from is large?

Is Cuál + noun used when the universe to chose from is small?

Would you say Cuál universidad es más mejor or Qué universidad es más mejor?

Which university is the best?

Hola Andrew

You can say both:

¿Cuál universidad es la mejor? or ¿Qué universidad es la mejor?

But using cuál would generally mean that the people involved in the conversation have been talking about some specific universities, so the question with cuál would be referring to which one out of those that were mentioned. However, using qué, although it could also be used in the scenario described before, it is more common on more open questions without thinking of a preconceived selection, as if we were saying, out of all the universities in this region, in this county, or in the world, (a wider scope) which one is the best?
