Pero and sino que

Pero and sino que

"Pero is a conjunction that is used in a second clause to make a contrast or make a limitation to the idea expressed in the previous clause."

Luis y yo no hemos roto ________ nos hemos dado un tiempo para pensar.

Luis and I haven't broken up but we gave each other some time to think.

I don't understand why this sentence doesn't use pero. Doesn't it make a contrast or limitation to the idea expressed in the previous clause?

Sino que is used to negate or correct the first part of the sentence i.e they didn't break up but rather or on the contrary they have given each other time to think. Sino que is also used because two different verbs have been used in the first and second clauses - romper and dar

See lesson - Difference between pero, sino and sino que (but)

Thanks, I'm still trying to understand the difference but I had forgotten the rule about two different verbs in each clause. Would pero or sino have been used if it was the same verb?
