No hint as to familiar or formal "you"

Where in this question is there a clue as to whether to use formal or informal second person singular? Two possible correct answers without a hint!

Hola Ian,

We have now in the system both as correct answers "hubieras sido" and "hubiera sido".

Why sido here rather than estado? Being polite with someone in a specific situation seems more like a temporary state than a personal permanent trait to me.
