Hola Peter,
Mirar and Ver are tricky but to put it simply, if you want to say that you "watch something" on TV or in a cinema or in a football stadium etc, you must use the verb Ver. This is also true of visiting someone "I am going to see / visit my uncle." It has other uses of course.
Mirar is used when there is a situation going on and you want someone's attention e.g. "Look what is happening over there" or "When you go to the police station we want you to look at some mugshots" or "Look there's the bus."
Mirar is also used when it is about pay attention to something or someone, like" "Look at that motorbike!"
I hope that helps
John
