How do I know when a noun is masculine or feminine?
Do I go off the last letter of the noun? Like planta and idea end in 'a' so I use una, but if it ends in an 'o' or any other letter besides 'a' then I say un.

Hola Jessica
That is the general rule in Spanish for masculine and feminine nouns. So that is what we call a regular noun. We have a lesson about this here.
But bear in mind that is only a general rule -it doesn't apply to all nouns at all
We've created lessons about nouns with a specific ending that tend to be either masculine or feminine. If we click in the link below, you will see an explanation and some lessons all related to nouns in Spanish. I hope it's helpful.
