Hola James,
"Esquina" refers to the outside, not the inside, for example "la esquina del edificio" (the corner of the building) or "la esquina de la mesa" (the corner of the table) while "rincón" refers to the space formed by the angle inside something, for example "el rincón de la habitación" (the corner of the room).
Sometimes we use "rincón" as in "nook", as a nice cosy space (away from the rest) , for example:
"Podíamos ver a los enamorados hablándose con ternura en aquel rincón." (We could se the lovebirds talking to each other with affection in that nook."
