I asked kwiziq to search “ Meter vs Poner” to teach me the nuances between both meaning to put. It failed. Why?
Hola Habib
August is a month when part of the Kwiziq staff go on holiday and there are some days when the forum is not attended as often as we would like to.
I have searched but haven't found any question that was left behind about "meter and poner" though. Was it maybe a follow up question?
In any case, the difference between the verbs meter and poner is the same as in English: to put and to introduce
So, poner has the general meaning of "to put" as in "placing something somewhere":
He puesto mi bolso en la silla.
I have put my bag on the chair.
Yo siempre pongo mis llaves en este bol.
I always put my keys on this bowl.
Pon los juguetes en esa caja.
Put the toys in that box.
You can use poner to put things "on" something or "in" something.
Meter is more specific to say "to put inside" so you only use it when something goes "inside" something:
Mete los juguetes en la caja.
Put the toys in / inside the box.
He metido los calcetines en ese cajón.
I have put the socks in that drawer.
I hope this clarifies your doubt.
The verbs poner and meter do have other meanings other than to put, as they are used in lots of idiomatic expressions, though.
Saludos
