Hola Dorit

It is true that by the context it is not completely clear that we are referring to Gregorio Rojo being his first coach as something seen as a beginning and end action in the past (which would trigger the preterite "fue", against the more descriptive usage of the imperfect tense "era"), so we've just added "era" as another possible correct answer.
