Can you please tell me when to use 'eso' and when to use 'ese' or 'esa'. In the sentence, 'Eso es un paraguas.' why 'eso' and not 'ese'? And, is the usage of 'esto' similar?
Thank you.
Colin

Hola Colin,
esto and eso are used to mean "this thing here..." so:
Esto es un paraguas y eso es un parasol.
This [thing here] is an umbrella and that [thing there] is a parasol.
It is as if we were "identifying" things.
If we used "este", "ese", we would be referring to a specific item with the intention of differentiating it from others:
Este es mi paraguas.
This [one] is my umbrella.
Saludos
Inma
