Hola Michael
It doesn't work the same in English and Spanish. When you have a subject or a direct object, in Spanish you generally need the article:
Me gustan los gatos.
I like cats.
Los gatos son bonitos.
Cats are pretty.
Odio los gatos.
I hate cats.
