El Mar

El Mar

"La mar está revuelta hoy." The sea is rough today

This asked if this was correct. I put no as mar is  a masculine noun, but this was marked as incorrect. The dictionary states it is a masculine noun. On the explanation this it states that it can be feminine in a poetic sense. This phrase is not in my opinion poetic but an observation.

Can you please explain this. Thanks

Hola Jannice

The sentence "La mar está revuelta hoy" doesn't seem very poetic seen just like that without any more context; that's true. But it could a non-poetic sentence also used by people who live near the sea (e.g. fishermen) and seem to use this noun as feminine very often referring to the sea even in an ordinary sentence, not trying to be poetic at all. I am going to add this information to the lesson.
