Difference between empezar and comenzar?

What is the difference between empezar and comenzar?  Are they synonyms or does one or the other apply in different situations?

This question relates to:Spanish vocab and grammar list "List of Spanish -zar verbs that change z>c in the preterite for the yo form"

Hola Dean

The only difference is that "comenzar" is slightly more formal than "empezar" but other than that they are interchangeable.
