Why don’t buitres and águilas reales have definite articles? Is it because they are examples? It’s 50/50 for me with definite articles, I can’t see any pattern and the rules seem to change even after looking at the lessons!

Normally you don’t use the article when talking about an unspecified quantity of something. In the translation it says -There were many wild animals, for example vultures, golden eagles.

Thanks. There are many exceptions though? Me gustan los gatos. Isn't that an unspecified amount?

When you use the structure Me gusta/me gustan you have to include the definite article.
