Hello. Why we use "consiguieron", not "consiguyeron"? Thanks. Zuzana

Consiguieron - i/y rules
This question relates to:Spanish lesson "Conjugate stem-changing-ir verbs (e > i) in the preterite tense in Spanish (El Pretérito Indefinido)"

Hola Zuzana
The verb conseguir is an -ir verb (infinitive ending in -ir) and the endings for the preterite are these:
-í
-iste
-ió
-imos
-isteis
-ieron
So, for the ellos/ ellas form you have the stem: consegu- (but that e turns into a i because it has this irregular change in the stem, so "consigu-..." and then ending "ieron":
consiguieron
There's no need to turn that i from ieron in a y.
I hope it clarifies it.
Saludos
