Why is the personal 'a' not used in 'conocemos gente'? Would 'conocemos a la gente' be an acceptable answer here?

In this case we are dropping the "a" because there is a tendency to drop it when you talk very generally. Here we are just saying you meet people in general (not referring to specific people) as a something you gain by using internet, therefore it's not incorrect to drop "a".
