Is it still true that in some areas coger should be avoided due to negative connotations?

Yes, it is in pretty much all Latin America. Coger has sexual connotations. This lesson you just saw is only for students with focus in Spanish from Spain. For students with focus in Latin American Spanish we have this parallel lesson using the verb "agarrar" instead: "agarrar y..."
