Can we use espero with El Imperfecto de Subjuntivo? Would the meaning be different from when El Perfecto de Subjuntivo is used?

If we used "espero que + imperfect subjunctive" we are also referring to something that you hope "happened"/"had happened" - something in the past. 

It has the same use as the perfect subjunctive. The use of the perfect subjunctive may add the extra nuance of something "completed" in the past, but the meaning is pretty much the same.

1. Espero que me hayan seleccionado para el trabajo. 

2. Espero que me seleccionaran para el trabajo.

I hope they selected my for the job.
