Why le, not lo?

Le han suspendido.He failed [an exam].Hi, I’m confused about Le here. It seems the exam is “lo”, a thing, so direct object pronoun. Thanks for your help. Shirley.

Sometimes we use the pronoun "le" instead of "lo" as a direct object pronoun. This is called "leísmo". Here's a bit of information on leísmo.
