Todo alcalde merece respeto. (English trans: All mayors deserve respect.) Why is it not Todos alcades merece respeto?

Hola Pati
You can either say "todos los alcaldes" or in singular "todo alcalde", but not "todos +noun without the article".
So, for example:
todos los días = everyday
todas las mañanas = every morning
todos los profesores = every teacher
todo profesor = every teacher
todo estudiante = every student
But using "todo + noun" in singular sounds more formal.

I'm wondering if the English translation would be closer to "Every mayor deserves respect" rather than All mayors deserve respect?
