Hola Mollie

The Spanish tense that we call "El Pretérito Perfecto" is the English "Present Perfect":

Yo he trabajado mucho hoy I have worked a lot today

Ella ha ido a Madrid She has been to Madrid

Nosotros hemos escuchado atentamente We have listened carefully

etc

The tense you are referring to: hube dicho, hubo dicho, hubiste dicho... is a different one that is hardly used nowadays. This is called the Pretérito Anterior, which in English is generally referred to as the Past Perfect. This would be: I had worked a lot, she had been to Madrid, We had listened carefully. For this, we use the Pluscuamperfecto:

Yo había trabajado mucho.

Ella había ido a Madrid

Nosotros habíamos escuchado atentamente

Here is a table with all tenses and their names in Spanish and English. We understand it can be a bit confusing with so many different names, so this table is a good reference to look at in case of doubt. I hope it's useful.

Saludos

Is there a way I can put the table of tenses in my notebook?
