Serio becomes seriecillo?

Hi,

Which sentence softens the meaning of the word "serious"?

HINT: serio = serious

Why does serio become seriecillo when it doesn't end with an e or a constant?

Is it common in Spanish to have two words seriecilla / seriecillo that are almost similar yet so different in meaning?

Thank you!

Hola llias,

Sorry, that example with the adjective "serio/seria" (serious) shouldn't be there, because it doesn't apply the rule. In this case, we change the last vowel (o or a) to -e and add the suffix -cillo/-cilla.

We are talking about two different words: one is this adjective (serious) and the other one is "serie" (a tv series), they do coincide in form when adding the diminutive -cillo/-cilla.

- Me gusta esa seriecilla de misterio. (I like that mistery series)

-No te pongas tan seriecillo. (Don't get so serious.)

I hope this helped.

Saludos
