Mi novio ha llegado a casa

Why does the use the preterite perfect rather than the simple preterite?

The present perfect is used for events that have happened recently (usually within the same day). The exercise starts with - what a surprise I got today and all the things she talks about happened today so are within the same timeframe.

I think it is worth noting that what Marsha says is really only true in Spain. In many parts (all of?) Latin America it would be more natural to use the simple preterite in this story.
