Why would you say soy un cantautor? I thought you were not supposed to use an indefinite article when saying what occupation you have?

You can omit the article and say "Soy cantautor..." - the reason to include it here is because there is a tendency to include it if the definition of your profession is a bit more extensive, like in this case that it's adding more definition/details to the profession: soy [un] cantautor nicaragüense de salsa...
