I was wondering if there is a reason the "c" turns in a "j

Hi,

I was wondering if there is a reason the "c" turns in a "j",  It seems to me that

conduce would sound fine in front of "e" and "i" (perhaps just a change in front of the "a" and "o".

Do you know of any reason for the change?

Thank you.

Hola Nicole

That's an interesting question...

I am not 100% sure but it may be because in Latin, the conjugation in the Preterite tense contains letter x, e.g: conduxi. The x from the Latin turned into letter j later on in Spanish, so I am guessing that may be the reason.

Hope this helps,

Saludos
