Some examples use the verb “estar”. But can we ever use “ser”? Ex: “Mis primos fueron aburridos hasta que viajaron a españa.” Thanks.

Why not? My cousins were (used to be ) boring until they traveled to Spain. Makes sense. But I’d use “eran” instead of “fueron”.

Yes you can. The meaning would be different though, as Gennady said. With estar it would mean "boring" not "bored".
