Anda: it seems like one could use "vaya" as a synonym

Are anda and vaya interchangeable when used to express surprise?

You're right, anda and vaya are pretty much interchangeable. Vaya is normally a bit softer, I mean, when you're surprised but not massively. Anda can be used for any kind of surprise, and you'd change your intonation when you say it depending on how surprised you are.
