A question about a verb used.

Hola, buenas tardes a todos,Voy a intentar el pregunto en español. ¡Lo siento si es realmente malo! :))Tengo una pregunta sobre esta frase:‘Ese letrero no quiere decir que nosotros no podamos usar esta carretera.’That sign isn't saying that we can't use this road.HINT: Conjugate "poder" in El Presente Subjuntivo.Por favor, podríais decirme:¿Me gustaría saber, por qué se utiliza aquí el verbo querer?¿Por qué no se utiliza solamente decir? Por ejemplo, ...no dice... o ...no está diciendo...Para mí la frase se traduce como... “The sign ‘doesn’t want to say’... ¿Podría traducirse como ‘doesn’t wish to say’?    Gracias

Hola Clara"querer decir" (los dos verbos juntos, como un bloque) significa: "to mean". En inglés, esta estructura verbal no existe. Por esta razón, hemos traducido en inglés como "is saying that..." Otras frases, usando esta estructura verbal:(Imagine someone telling you something but you don't quite get what they mean; you would say:)"..., pero...¿qué quieres decir? (but what do you mean?)"... entonces, lo que quieres decir es que... (so, what you mean is that...)(Imagine you see the "not overtaking" sign on the road when you are driving and your son asks you:"Mamá, ¿qué quiere decir esa señal? (Mum, what does that sign mean?)"Esa señal quiere decir que ahora no podemos adelantar." (This sign means that we cannot overtake at the moment.)Es similar a: "Significa que..."We chose "isn't saying that.." in the sentence you mentioned because it is as if the signs were "saying/communicating" something.Espero que haya sido de ayuda.Un saludoInma
