Classical music came to Mexico, as was expected, after the Conquest, with the establishment of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The clergy were the main promoter of European classical music, and the first music school was founded in 1524, where native people were instructed to serve as musicians in churches. Much of the music composed in the cathedral of Mexico reached a great level and apogee, with the arrival of numerous choirmasters who composed masses and psalms.
