The history of radio began in 1887, when the German physicist Heinrich Hertz detected electromagnetic radiation from powerful electrical charges. Thanks to this discovery and the work of other scientists, in 1901 the Italian Guillermo Marconi built a transmitter powerful enough to send messages across the Atlantic Ocean. That was how the invention of the radio developed commercially. Moreover, the radio became a new way of sending Morse Code and one of the industries that benefited the most from this new technology was the merchant navy that counted on the radio as the most important element of communication. Years later, some people began to wonder whether the radio could be used to transmit other sounds, and on Christmas Eve 1906, Reginald Fessenden broadcast the first program with music and locution, being the antecedent of the current radio.
