The first time that women's suffrage was recognised in Spain, was in the Constitution of 1931 of the Second Spanish Republic. In the elections to the Constituent Courts of June 1931, which were carried out by universal male suffrage, women obtained the right to passive suffrage, so they were able to present themselves as candidates. Even though only three women were elected, they had a decisive role in the debate on granting the right to vote to women, the so-called active suffrage. These three women were Margarita Nelken, Clara Campoamor and Victoria Kent, all of them militants from various political parties at that time.
